FAQs

How can the The Code help me?

The Student Accommodation Code protects your rights to a safe, good quality place to live. It outlines everything you should expect from your university or college accommodation as well as your responsibilities as a tenant. If you feel your accommodation doesn’t meet these high standards, there is a clear process in place to make sure your voice is heard and to put things right.

What if my university or college accommodation isn’t covered by The Code?

Your accommodation may be covered by one of the following:

(This is for student halls of residences managed and controlled by private accommodation providers)

Why does the The Code exist?

To comply with the Housing Act 2004, all universities or colleges can sign up to one of two codes of management practices, approved by the government.

  • The Student Accommodation Code (UUK/GuildHE)
  • The ANUK/Unipol Code of Standards

The Student Accommodation Code was developed in 2006 by UUK and GuildHE specifically for educational institutions and sets high standards in the student accommodation sector. Both codes aim to make sure you have a safe, good quality place to live whilst at university or college.

How is The Code enforced?

Each university and college signed up to The Code is independently audited every three years to confirm that its accommodation management practices are up to the high standards expected. To ensure full accountability and transparency, auditors follow a rigorous four-step process for each investigation.

I have a problem with my accommodation, what should I do?

First, check whether your university or college accommodation is signed up to The Student Accommodation Code using the coverage search on the homepage. If your accommodation is covered, it will show you the steps you need to follow to help put things right.
